Nervous Before Speaking? Here’s What I Wish I Knew Sooner…

Have you ever felt that jolt of fear when you’re about to speak in front of a group?

That moment when your mouth goes dry, your hands get clammy, and your mind suddenly goes blank—even though you thought you were prepared?

It’s the moment many entrepreneurs dread the most, yet it’s often the very skill that separates those who build thriving, profitable businesses from those who remain stuck and invisible.

The truth is, your ability to stand in front of a room (or camera) with genuine confidence isn’t just a “nice-to-have” skill.

In today’s noisy marketplace, it’s often the difference between:

• Being seen as “just another coach/consultant” vs. a trusted authority

• Charging premium prices vs. constantly competing on price

That’s why I decided to break down the exact strategies I’ve used to transform from a nervous, uncertain speaker to someone who genuinely looks forward to presentation opportunities—strategies that have directly contributed to millions in revenue.

In my latest podcast episode, “Accessing Certainty and Confidence When You Speak,” I’m sharing five powerful approaches that will help you access unwavering confidence when all eyes are on you.

Here are the key strategies that I go deep into on the episode:

1. Focus on Helping People

This might sound simple, but it’s transformative: Get your focus off yourself and onto your audience.

What you focus on expands. Focus on your nervousness? It grows. Focus on helping your audience solve their problems? Your confidence naturally rises.

In the Sell From Stage Journey, the first major shift is moving from self-focus to other-focus. The moment you step into genuine service, fear begins to dissolve.

2. Make It a Conversation, Not a Presentation

The word “presentation” itself creates pressure. But conversations? We have those every day.

When you approach your talk as a conversation with friends who need your help, everything changes. Your body language relaxes. Your voice finds its natural tone. Your audience feels connected rather than lectured to.

3. Decide That You’re Supposed to Be There

In the episode I shared the story of my first major paid presentation—speaking to 5,500 people at a HP conference. Talk about intimidating!

But I made a decision before walking on stage: “I am supposed to be here. They wouldn’t have invited me if I wasn’t.”

That simple internal decision changed everything. When you decide you belong on that stage, your audience feels it too.

4. Practice It Into Your Body

True confidence comes when your content moves from your head into your body.

It’s not just about knowing your material intellectually—it’s about practicing until your body knows what to do without conscious thought. This creates a beautiful alignment between your message and your physical presence.

I recommend a process of scaled exposure—starting with practicing alone, then with a trusted friend, then a small group, before tackling larger audiences.

5. Get Present

In the podcast, I walk through a powerful three-step exercise that instantly grounds you before speaking. This simple practice has saved me countless times when nervousness threatened to take over.

When you’re fully present, you can respond to your audience’s energy rather than being trapped in your rehearsed script.

If you’ve ever felt your confidence slip away before a presentation, or if you have an important talk coming up, I think this episode will be incredibly valuable for you.
