Here’s How to Hire Staff for Your Coaching Biz (The Right Way)

Years ago…

I used to dream about the position my business is in now.

(At the time it seemed like a pipe dream)

But the funny thing about dreams is…

They don’t usually include the challenges you’ll inevitably face as you grow.

You tend to dream of freedom, money, the lives you’ll change, etc…

Not the overhead costs, the taxes you’ll owe or how to hire staff.

While I wish we could tackle all those challenges right now…

Let’s focus on the latter as it’s been an emphasis for us lately.

Hiring staff is certainly a big challenge…

There are so many things that go into it.

It’s why I brought Laura Couvillon, expert recruiter at IntegrateUp on to talk about how to go about hiring staff.

Two of the most common questions coaches ask is who and when should I hire?

Personally, I think you should hire your first part-time customer service or administration person at around $60 to $100,000. So let’s say you’re at $6,000 per month. This will free you up to do more higher value activities.

In the podcast we went through the big three phases that Laura sees based on her clients and then needs for hiring.

Here’s a good structure that we discussed in depth on the podcast.

Phase 1 – Foundations

In this foundation phase, typically coaches are making between 50k and 1.5 million. During this phase you are hiring off of need alone. You’re hiring front line staff, firstly an Admin or Customer Service Assistant, Social Media Contractor, Sales Person, a Coach to support your customers better, etc…

Phase 2 – Growth

Now this is typically in the growth phase, for coaches making between 1.5 million to 5 million. Here you’re hiring your managers and specialists. Marketing Managers, Operational Managers, Customer Service Managers, etc. You’ll also want to find some ninjas in specific areas, for example hiring a really good quality Copywriter or Funnel Builder can change the game to this level. Specialists don’t have to be full-time hires, they can be a contractor for special projects. But at this phase you start to formalize departments. This is where you get real departments in your business and the manager is driving this department, not just you.

Phase 3 – Acceleration

This last phase is an accelerated growth phase, and is usually for those making 7 million or more. Here you’re hiring leadership of departments because each department will have multiple employees. Sales Director, Marketing Director, or even COO or CEO etc… The focus is having directors that can focus on strategy and not just execution.

Hiring is a beast unto its own.
