I almost quit coaching (then learned the 3 skills that changed everything)

My first coaching session almost made me quit.

I was in my laundry room on a landline doing a practice session. Forty-five minutes in, the woman just goes off: “Colin, you are p%$$ing me off.”

I was really shaken up from it.

I walked out and told my wife, “I don’t know if this is for me.”

Fast forward 17 years…

Now I’ve done over 4,500+ hours of paid coaching and my current rate is $3,800/hour.

Last week I keynoted at the American Institute of Hypnotherapy and Neurolinguistic Programming.

This week, 55+ people flew in from around the world to spend three days with me.

That first bad experience taught me something crucial.

You can learn to be a transformational coach.

I lacked the three skills that separate okay coaching from transformational coaching.

When you master these three, your clients have breakthroughs and you can be paid handsomely for it.

They leave with new awareness about themselves. They see their situations differently.

And they’re willing to pay premium rates for that transformation.

I got this instagram DM from a longtime ELITE client of mine this week, and it just confirmed how much doing good work in people’s lives actually matters.

This week’s episode breaks down exactly what those three skills are and how to implement them.

Here’s what we unpack:

1. Master powerful questions

Stop giving advice first. Start asking better questions. “For what purpose are you choosing to be angry?” “When did you create that belief?” “Who taught you that?” Good questions create awareness. Awareness creates breakthroughs. The best coaches get people to discover the answer, not deliver it.

2. Use reframes to shift perspective

Tell stories. Share metaphors. Use the feel-felt-found structure. Your job is to take a negative experience and help them see it differently. A failed launch isn’t a failure, it’s the lesson before the success. A plane in liftoff needs high velocity to get off the ground. Same situation, completely different perspective.

3. Blend all three together with mentoring

It’s not just questions. It’s not just reframes. It’s not just advice. The real transformation happens when you blend powerful questions, reframes, and advice together on the same call. You ask, you show them a different way, then you tell them what they could do.

If you’re coaching people and want to charge premium rates, you need these three skills locked in.

P.S. This newsletter is not written by AI. I’ve sweated over every word. That woman who got angry at me in my laundry room? She accidentally taught me the most important lesson of my coaching career. Sometimes the feedback that stings the most is the one that changes everything.
