Do you feel confident going up to a stranger and striking up a conversation?
This skill may seem insignificant, but from my experience, it is one of the highest money-making skills you can master.
The problem is that most people do it in a really weird and awkward way.
You’ll either make the mistake of staying too surface-level and being uninteresting or diving too deep into the conversation too early and making the other person feel uncomfortable.
I can look back over some of the most significant money-making experiences I’ve ever had, and they all started by meeting a stranger in a small room at an event.
That’s exactly why I wanted to continue the conversation this week talking about how to have great conversations with strangers that lead to money-making opportunities.
And I’m not talking about classic MLM-style conversations where you say… “Are you interested in a way to make an extra $5,000 per month? I have a unique opportunity for you.”
That’s just weird.
I’m talking about knowing how to authentically connect with a new person and work out if you and them are going to be a good fit for other opportunities moving forward.
This week on the Expert Edge Podcast, I continue the conversation about conversations.
Here is a snippet of what you’ll discover:
Pace, pace, lead questions
One of the first things you must learn to do is understand how to build rapport with people so that it leads to deeper conversation. Using pacing questions at the start of your conversation is really important so that it doesn’t break rapport. These can be some simple questions like “What brought you to this event?” In the podcast, I share three or four simple pacing questions that you can ask that can break the ice and then lead to deeper conversations after.
Answer the question with multiple data points
Most people struggle to have good conversations with other people because the way they answer their question leaves the other person with nothing to go with. Learning how to answer your question with what’s called multiple data points is important because it allows the conversation to flow and evolve. In the podcast, I share examples of how you can answer a question in a way that gives the other person lots of data points to continue the conversation from.
Amp up your curiosity dial
If you’ve ever found yourself in an awkward position during conversation, it’s probably because you’ve asked the wrong question or you need to increase your curiosity. The skill of knowing how to increase your curiosity will get you out of many uncomfortable conversations and into a dynamic situation. You should avoid asking the question “why”—that specific question will make people defensive. Instead, you should ask “what” and “how” questions that lead to non-threatening conversations.
If you’re ready to become a conversation master, then make sure to check out this week’s episode so that you can connect with more people, make more money, and just enjoy your life better.
